It’s notable that the highest-level works from this period have all but disappeared - acquired by museums or hidden in private collections.
Timkov’s last exhibition in 1993 was the monumental summation of an honored painter. The public in attendance was shaken with the integrity and wholeness of his artistic outlook, his perceptions, and his consummate spiritual awareness. It signified the emergence of a classic Russian artist whose works are viewed as those of a highly distinguished and original master.
Throughout his life Chetkov carved out a path of his own, laying down several lines of work reflecting his emerging philosophy. Invoking classical, mythological and biblical themes, he channeled his spiritual and emotional energy into myriad subjects. Never part of any trend or group, his special intellect and fondness for abstract painting cast him as a loner.
Golubev was entirely dedicated to the principles of post-impressionism, of which he had created his own original Russian version. His energetic impasto, the free and open brushstrokes and disturbing color harmonies gave the traditionally intimate central Russian landscape a new penetrating sense of drama.
